Fraser Coast is one of Australia’s top nature destinations, featuring two world heritage listed areas - Fraser Island and the Great Barrier Reef. The Fraser Coast region encompasses the areas of Fraser Island, Hervey Bay, Maryborough, Tiaro and the Great Sandy Strait.
World Heritage-listed Fraser Island developed over 800,000 years ago, and is the largest sand island in the world. It is one of the few places where rainforest grows on sand. Visitors will be treated to abundant pristine freshwater lakes, crystal clear creeks and cool peaceful rainforests. With over 325 species of birds and several species of wallaby, possums, echidnas, flying foxes and eastern Australia’s purest population of dingo, wildlife enthusiasts will not be disappointed.
Hervey Bay is the gateway to World Heritage-listed Fraser Island and is a 3 ½ hour drive north of Brisbane. Hervey bay is renowned for its whale watching between July and October. Visitors to the area can experience beautiful safe beaches, adventure activities and wildlife viewing. In and along the tranquil waterways of the Great Sandy Strait nature abounds. Fish, dugong, turtles, dolphins, mangroves, sea grass pastures, wild flowers and bird life are plentiful.
