Located an easy four hour drive north of Brisbane and accessed by road, rail and air, this region is also known as the southern gateway to the Great Barrier Reef. The coral cays of Lady Elliot Island and Lady Musgrave Island are a must see for nature enthusiasts, snorkellers and divers. Visitors are also treated with 140km of unspoiled sandy coastline and 18 national parks.
There are plenty of opportunities for four wheel driving, bushwalking or for scenic drives through picturesque coastal and hinterland regions. A major attraction is the Turtle hatchery at Mon Repos (14 km east of Bundaberg), which has the largest mainland concentration of turtles in the South Pacific Ocean region. A visit to Bundaberg would not be complete without dropping in at the Bundaberg Rum Factory. Take a distillery tour and find out about the history of this Australian industry, created over 100 years ago.
Other places worth visiting include Bargara, the Town of 1770 and Agnes Water, linked by kilometres of beautiful beach and fronting on to the Coral Sea. The Town of 1770 is the departure point for daily cruises to the Southern Barrier Reef.
